“This time, under the protection of federal troops, more than three thousand people started out from Selma. Over five days the sun burned down on the marchers and rain fell in torrents, but not one complained, no one gave up. “We felt bonded with one another, with the people we passed, with the entire nation,” John recalled. By the time the marches reached Montgomery, they were twenty-five thousand strong.”
