Feeding The Chickens

“If there is a single point in my childhood that provided an early glimpse into my future, a first indication of what would come to shape my character and eventually guide me into the heart of the civil rights movement —- qualities certainly could not name at the time, such as patience, compassion, nonviolence, civil disobedience and not a little bit of willful stubbornness — it would be the year my parents gave me the responsibility of taking care of our family’s chickens.”
