Anne Silver
I am an American who lives in a suburb of Paris, France, with my husband and my cat. I’m a self-taught writer and photographer who is in love with poetry, with intimacy, with metaphor, and who is driven by a need to make meaning of the experience of living a rich and full, and sometimes difficult, life. My photography is entwined with bits of memory and dream that ebb and flow, that surface and then recede into the unconscious. In the end, memories just the stories that we tell ourselves about what we have experienced. They change and evolve over time. We’re constantly writing and rewriting the stories of our lives.
Before moving to France and dedicating myself full-time to my art and writing, I worked for 15 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, specializing in trauma, depression, and anxiety disorders. In my practice, I did a lot of work with dreams, with guided imagery, and often used artistic techniques with my clients to facilitate self-expression and to foster a connection to the authentic self in a way that bypassed the spoken language. Art, symbolism, story-telling were always woven into my therapeutic approach. I believe in the inherent healing power of the act of making art. It allows us to transform something difficult or painful into something beautiful. That is the definition of resilience. Somehow, despite unthinkable loss, we can find a way to carry on, and even to thrive. My photos are a record of that journey.
